23rd Generation: Richard FitzAlan

• Richard was born 1313 in Sussex, England.
• He married Eleanor Plantagenet of Lancaster at Ditton Church Stoke Poges.
• They had six children together: Richard, John, Thomas, Joan, Alice, and Eleanor.
• Richard was the 10th Earl of Arundel and the 8th Earl of Surrey. His father was executed in 1326 and his family lands were lost. By 1330, he was back in favor and reacquired the estates of his father in Sussex and the Welsh marshes.
• Richard served as Justiciar of North Wales and Governor of Caernarfon Castle. He was one of the most trusted supporters of Edward, the Black Prince. he spent much of his time fighting in Scotland and France during the 100 Years War. He was the Commander of the Army in the North as well as serving as the Admiral that defeated the Spanish fleet in 1340.
• His first wife was Isabel le Despenser. This was arranged when they were 8 or 9 years old.
• Richard died on January 24, 1376, (63 years old) at Arundel Castle, Sussex, England. He is buried at Lewes Priory in Lewes.

23rd Generation: Eleanor Plantagenet of Lancaster

• Eleanor was born on September 11, 1318, in Monmouthshire, Wales.
• She was the 6th child of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster.
• Eleanor married Richard. This was his second marriage. They had six children together:
  • Richard FitzAlan (1343-1397) 4th Earl of Arundel
  • John FitzAlan (who we are descended from) (1344-1379)
  • Thomas Arundel FitzAlan (?-1414) Lord Chancellor during the reign of Richard II, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1397 to his death.
  • Lady Joan de Bohun (1347-1419) Married Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford. She was the maternal grandmother of Henry V.
  • Lady Alice Holland (1350-1416) Married Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent
  • Lady Eleanor FitzAlan (1356-before 1366)
• Eleanor died on January 11, 1372 (54 years old). She is buried at Lewes Priory in Lewes Sussex. See the above link for her tomb effigy.
