20th Generation: James FitzGerald
- James was born in Ireland.
- He married Mary de Burgh, and they had four children together: Thomas, Gerald, Honor, and Joan.
- James was the 6th Earl of Desmond. He was known as the “Usurper.” James was the younger brother to the 4th Earl of Desmond. However, when his brother died, James prevented the 4th Earl’s son from inheriting the title because he married below his station (a Norman marrying a Gaelic woman). This was against the Statutes of Kilkenny. The son was then forced into exile in France, where he died two years later.
- James served as constable of Limerick and was a strong supporter of the House of York.
- James died in 1462 and is buried at the Church of Youghal, Ireland.
