  • Thomas was born in Ireland.
  • He married Ellice de Barry.
  • They had seven children together: James, Maurice, Thomas, John, Gerald, Katherine, and Ellen.
  • Thomas was the 7th Earl of Desmond beginning in 1462. He was known as the Great Earl. Thomas served as Lord Deputy of Ireland from 1463 to his death. He founded the College of Youghal in 1464. He sided with the House of York and put down a Lancastrian invasion in the Battle of Piltown
  • Thomas was badly defeated in a battle in 1466 at Offaly. He became beloved in Ireland for his defense of the Irish people.
  • Thomas was beheaded in the year 1468 in Drogheda, Ireland, while at a priory. He is buried at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. Afraid of a revolt, King Edward revoked the proceedings against Thomas and allowed his son to become the next Earl.
