- John was born in 1774 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
- He married Elizabeth Shook (Betsy) in 1802 in Burke County, North Carolina. They had six children together: John, Susan, Isabella, Catherine, Rachel, and Elijah.
- John and his family moved to Missouri in 1816.
- He died on October 13, 1818, (44 years old) in Washington, Missouri. He was killed by his slave while at camp inspecting property along the Gasconade River in Gasconade County, Missouri.
- Elizabeth was born on July 23, 1774, in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
- She married John in 1802 in Burke County, North Carolina, and they had six children together (all children born in Swain County, North Carolina)
