He eventually took his mother’s surname. He served as the high sheriff in Northumberland and later Lancashire. In 1174 he joined other Knights to attack the invading Scottish army led by William I of Scotland. Her mother was Agnes Ferrers, daughter of William, 5th Earl of Derby.
